INDEPENDENT READING IS FREE READING!
The books are free choice, though it should be a quality book appropriate for school reading and at the students' age and reading level.
We have lots of books to choose from in our library. Students are welcome to borrow them, just be sure to check them out using the classroom library website.
We read 2-3 days a week in class for about 10 minutes.
Ideally, students should also be reading at home 15-20 minutes daily.
Independently reading in a book you enjoy is an excellent way to build vocabulary, reading speed, and stamina.
It's always a good idea to make some notes about a book you finish in case you need to refresh your memory later.
Each week, you will update your reading progress to your Goodreads account.
And, not to sound creepy, but I do observe you while you read sometimes. If you aren't focused on reading in class and you aren't making progress in your book, it's fairly obvious.
We'll use the website Goodreads to track reading progress, write reviews, recommend books to each other, and even have a few out of class discussions. This is a website I've been using for years to track my own reading and I'm so excited to implement it into this school year.
Use the guide here to help you set up your account and go through the initial steps.
If you're checking books out from the classroom library, make sure you use the online checkout system. Follow the steps below to check out books.
1. Go to www.classroom.booksource.com
2. Enter the login information (Username: Mrs Mizes Books Passwords: Room330)
3. Select your class (i.e. class of 2022, 2023, or 2024)
4. Select your name from the list (notify me ASAP if you don't see your name)
5. Search your book (scanning is coming to the app soon, hopefully)
Also keep in mind that books are "checked out" for 2 week cycles. You can recheck out your book at the end of 2 weeks, but all books MUST be returned at the end of each quarter.
Books that are lost or severly damaged will be charged to your classroom account, so please take care of them like the precious children that they are. <3
